The U. S. government liked the idea of slavery. Slavery began to spread around the U. S. A quarter million slaves were imported to the south. The south used their slaves to help make cotton. Some slaves laughed, coped and used violence to fight and try to escape. "Nat Turner was the leader of a violent slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831." (Bio.com) This man led about 70 other slaves on a rampage and killed men, women and children in revenge. Also, Harriet Tubman worked for the underground railroad. This amazing woman risked her own life to try and help about 300 slaves to freedom in the North. Who ever spoke out against slavery was hanged. The only way to end slavery seemed to be to start war.
